Maria-Alicia S. — Member Spotlight

unnamedWhen I was asked to be a Member Spotlight and share my story, I was both excited and nervous to share it with everyone. Before I started at Bodies by Design I was in relatively decent shape until I turned 18. At that age my weight hit an all-time high and that’s when I started trying out different dieting techniques on my own. I lost a drastic amount of weight in a very short amount of time, but the funny thing was that once I started eating again, the weight came back all at once. I was in university and I was eating everything – something quick for breakfast and lunch (usually fast food) and I often ate a meal late at night when I got home.

I was exhausted, distracted, overweight and I had developed a back ache that I had never experienced as an active teenager. I had become so embarrassed of myself and my body that I stopped going out with my friends and rarely went to the beach, and I was more comfortable staying at home in bed sulking about my weight rather than doing something about it.

After I graduated university, with my weight still fluctuating, I knew I needed to do something.I have a cousin that had been to Bodies by Design, and the trainers there helped him meet his goal, which inspired me. I was motivated to want to feel like myself again and to let go of the weight that was making me tired and uncomfortable with my body. My cousin had given me the number to BBD and I made an appointment in March 2015. As the booking day came near I cancelled my appointment without any real reason. I called back a couple days later and booked my consultation for the following month, and that’s where I met with my trainer. My first training session was a disaster — I needed to be taught how to lunge and squat properly, and I barely lasted half an hour before I felt like I was going to throw up. Needless to say, we had to end the session early. But after the session I signed my contract with Nat to become a member and to train with him two to three times a week. He pushed me to limits I couldn’t have reached by myself, and more importantly, he never gave up on me.

A year later, I can do the hour of training (plus more) and I feel fantastic. My endurance has increased significantly, as I was only able to do five pushups when I started and now can do more than 25! The difference between then and now is quite extreme. Looking back on my experience, I cannot even put into words how happy I am that I joined BBD. I’ve learned a vast amount of information about working out and dieting that I had no clue about before. I learned to enjoy going to the gym instead of going to the gym because I was forced to. Nat taught me the number on the scale is just that — a number. My clothes fit completely different (most of them are way too big), and I learned how to eat properly to keep the weight off without starving myself. Because of Nat I have become comfortable with the person I am and I feel amazing, I have tons of energy and I am finally confident in my own skin. I became a part of a family at BBD and for that I am grateful for everything they have done for me.

To everyone who takes the time to read this, DO NOT give up on your goals. Getting to where you want to be takes dedication and determination. I’m not going to lie and say there weren’t times when I wanted to give up because the weight wasn’t coming off, but it isn’t about the number on the scale, it’s about the way you feel about yourself that ends up being the most worth it.
