Tough Mudder 2014 199[1]

Gabe never thought he would conquer something as gritty and challenging as the Tough Mudder event but with the support of his family he completed the event!

On Saturday, August 16, 2014, I participated and completed the Tough Mudder, which is an 18-km obstacle course.

It was quite a challenge,as it tested me physically, mentally and emotionally.

Tough Mudder’s website describes the event this way: “Sprawled out over 1,000 acres of calf-burning hills, deep, natural mud pits, and dense woodlands, this Canadian crusher is one of North America’s most geographically challenging courses.  Featuring a gauntlet of mind-numbing challenges, both natural and Mudder-made, we expect only the most courageous Canucks to cross this finish line.”

I first became interested in being a part of Tough Mudder four years ago.  I thought about signing up every year since, but never did.  I never thought I would be able to complete something as gritty and challenging, and to be honest, it was very intimidating.  Then, this past winter, my friend and fellow BBD client, Omer, asked if I wanted to join him in taking on this monster of an obstacle course.  This was the year! I agreed to do it, and we worked together as a team, helping and encouraging each other until we crossed the finish line.  Not only did we have to deal with the obstacles, but because it took place at a ski resort, we had to climb up the ski hills at least four or five times.  I lost count after one.  As if the course wasn’t challenging enough, we had to deal with what was the coldest day of the summer and never-ending rain. The elements made the course much more difficult, but it was not enough to stop us.  We were tired, hungry and cold, but we kept pushing and supporting each other. “No Mudder gets left behind” is the Mudder pledge.

Also, knowing my family was there, also braving the harsh weather, gave me the motivation to keep going.

When I joined Bodies by Design 4 1/2 years ago I weighed just over 200 pounds. With the help of a personal trainer, I worked hard and paid extra attention to my diet and eventually had the honour of becoming a Star Client Profile.  It was one the highlights of my life. I still use a personal trainer, who helps me stay on track with my overall training and my diet.  She tweaked my training in preparation for Tough Mudder, concentrating a little more on body weight exercises using the chin-up bar and TRX Suspension Trainer.

I have never been more fit.

Tough-Mudder-Toronto-2014-Gudk-3468321660-OAfter I was awarded with a Star Client Profile, I wondered what my next challenge would be.  I would come two years later in the form of Tough Mudder.  I was very nervous just before the start of the event and was second-guessing myself.  “I am I really ready for this?” “Did I prepare and train enough?”  “Am I crazy?”  All of those thoughts disappeared seconds before the start, when I looked over at my family and saw how proud they were of me.  Thoughts of doubt were replaced with, “I can do this and I will do this!” “I’m going to kill this!” My reward was crossing the finish line with Omer and seeing the look of pride on my family’s faces.  I am proud of my accomplishment and I already signed up to do the race again next year.

I’m 47 years old and I feel like I could conquer the world!

If I could offer any words of wisdom, it would be to make fitness a part of your life and embrace it.  It can make you do things you never thought possible.  Keep challenging yourself and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish!
