Robert recovers from Chronic Hip Pain after losing 55 pounds!

Our physical and mental health are vitally important and I’m convinced that regular exercise is the key to both. Our bodies and minds aren’t meant to rust out and grow flabby; they’re meant to be challenged and stimulated and to stay strong and energetic our entire life. And that means more strength and energy for enjoying our families and friends and all our blessings.

I was getting old before my time. I had chronic hip pain and sore feet. I was slow and sluggish. I slept badly. I dressed badly. I was losing my optimism and sense of humour. Oh yeah, and I was 50 pounds overweight and in denial. I avoided mirrors, weigh scales, doctors, fitted clothes, old pictures – anything that threatened to tell me the plain truth. My denial lasted years and I distracted myself with work, books, home repairs and other “important things” that somehow justified neglecting my health. Whenever any of my loved ones gently hinted that I should take better care of myself, I grumbled back with all kinds of lame, ready-made Robert Beforeexcuses and rationalizations. And so I lived with the hip pain, the bad posture, the poor sleep, the huge gut and the ugly loose-fitting clothes. I was only 54 but I looked 64 and felt 74. And I denied, denied, denied that I was living badly and aging quickly. And then, one day I happened to see a recently-taken photograph of my wife with … another guy!  There she was, beaming, fit, and beautiful standing beside some sad-ass, bloated, old fart with bags under his eyes and a weak, pained smile on his face. The dark suit he was wearing didn’t hide much.

Of course that other guy was the person I’d been avoiding in the mirror for so long. That was February 2011 and I decided then and there that that other guy had to go. My wife wasn’t going to be in any more pictures with him.And it was my wife again, God bless her, who had the solution for me. She had been going to Bodies by Design for several months already and she loved it. Her simple words:  “Rob, I really think you’ll like it there.”  I listened, finally. My training program was built to address my chronically sore hip. My personal trainers at BBD worked together to treat my hip and give me exercises that would strengthen my legs and core and, just as importantly, help me lose weight in order to take pressure off my joints. I started to see and feel progress almost immediately.

At the outset I was losing an average of two pounds a week and feeling stronger and more confident all the time and more determined. That was the thing that surprised me the most – my determination and motivation grew and grew. I wasn’t happy with losing 10 or 15 pounds. I wanted to win back my health and my confidence, as well as those extra 20 years that I had allowed myself to age prematurely. I looked forward to my training sessions and wanted to get better and stronger. The program that BBD had put me on was not easy by any means. It was challenging but it was realistic and perfectly suited to my needs and (woeful) fitness level. And my trainers were so inspiring and professional and the exercises so varied and interesting that it was easy to stay motivated. Time flew,  my weight kept dropping, my pains were diminishing, and my energy, enthusiasm and optimism grew all the time. I woke up every morning feeling younger and stronger.

Robert It’s almost a-year-and-a-half now since that first day that I resolved that that ‘other guy’ wasn’t going to be in any more pictures with my wife. I still feel great and haven’t lost any of my commitment to being fit and healthy. I’d be crazy to.  I’m over 50 pounds lighter, my hip pain is only a fraction of what it was and I can dress comfortably and take part in any sport or physical activity that strikes my fancy. I play basketball with my 20-year-old son and this spring my wife and I took up dragon boat racing. I’m able to work harder and more efficiently than ever. I concentrate better, sleep better, and enjoy my food better. Since every single aspect of my life has improved so much, it’s no surprise that I’ve become a more positive person and regained my optimism and zest for living.

Trainer Star Profile

Robert and Christian

Today Robert has reached a new fitness level and has been nominated as a Star Profile Winner– a title given to clients at Bodies by Design who have achieved their goals and who inspire others in their pursuit of results and excellence. When I first met Robert he was a very energetic and focused individual. He was like a sponge, soaking up everything I taught him. I had no problem explaining the value of proper nutrition to him as he had already implemented healthy eating into his lifestyle well before training with me. Rob’s fitness level at the start was above average, though he was very humble about it. Of course with anything new, he found some of my exercises to be challenging and unique. In one training session he referred himself to being like a “student learning from a master” as some exercises were viewed as being “cruel and unusual,” as if it were from some sort of Kung Fu cult classic film!

Robert and Kirk When I first met Robert he already had his goals in mind and was already well on track. He had the Bodies by Design program instilled in him through months of training. Robert was quiet and a little hard to read sometimes, but he knew what was asked of him was achievable and could be done. He believed in himself and worked hard. Robert’s family members who also train here all have a great work ethic, as they have a great example to follow. I believe that Robert’s determination has proven the measure of success that he has attained in fact Robert is one of the most dedicated clients I have met. He has never missed a session, and always arrives ready to go. Robert realizes the BBD program works and trusts the trainers, and he never second-guesses our routines and knowledge. I believe Robert will continue on his path of a healthy and fit lifestyle because he understands the importance and countless benefits.
