Suman Dhanju finds success with a wedding workout program at Bodies By Design and reaches her goal weight in 6 months while losing 4 dress sizes!
What was life before?
Before my time with Bodies by Design, I found that I was living each life simply “getting by.” I was generally happy but found that I got up, went to work, came home, and sprinkled in a little time for social events. Historically an active person, I found myself changing after I let go by becoming sedentary and slipping into a pattern of poor dietary choices. I used to participate in many sports teams, spent lots of time outdoors, and enjoyed cooking. I somehow found myself avoiding social events that involved physical activity, eating takeout more often than I care to admit and becoming lazy.
This laziness was not just a mental state, but a physical one where I found myself tired and sluggish, with no motivation to do much of anything.
What was your AHA moment? What made you want to change your lifestyle?
In 2018, I became engaged to my partner and hosted a large scale engagement party with family and friends. The entire process served as a massive wake-up call for me, both physically and mentally. The pictures of the happy occasion were tainted for me as I was shocked at how far I had let things go. I spent the last few years avoiding the camera, and as such didn’t have much of a reference point. During the engagement party itself, I spent the night dancing away with my family and friends. While I should have been elated, I remember thinking to myself how tired I was. I knew I needed to make a change.
How has BBD helped you? How has your life changed?
Joining BBD has been such a positive experience for me since my first day. The staff are all incredibly supportive and kind and offer up help in a non-judgmental environment. Stefano specifically has been a huge form of support and encouragement. Stefano, my trainer, took the time to ensure all of our sessions were tailored specifically for me. He considered my physical abilities, injuries, and most importantly, my goals. He has been a huge personal advocate for me ensuring I stay motivated by celebrating each of my little wins.
I have lost close to 20lbs, 19 to be exact, and am down 4 dress sizes. More importantly than the gains I received physically, I find myself with more energy. I’m waking up refreshed, powering through my day, and physically ready for my workouts or other physical activities. Where I once had difficulty walking up a few flights of stairs, I take the 11 flights stairs up to my office each workday – something that seemed previously impossible.
Beyond the aesthetic and physical gains, though, I find the most significant change has been in how I feel. I can only put it as feeling like myself again.
What was your routine, and how long did it take you to get to your goals?
I was able to achieve my goals in terms of physical endurance and a sense of improved health relatively quickly. At the 4 month mark, I found myself completing physical tasks that were previously impossible. From a weight-loss perspective, I hit my goal weight approximately 6.5 months into the program. I attribute a lot of this success to the little changes – making it in to the gym 3-4 times each week, participating in more activities outdoors, cutting back on alcohol, and generally being aware of what I was eating. I also cannot say
enough about the support I received from Stefano to stay on track and reminded of my goals.
What would you tell anyone that wants to get started?
Just start. The hardest part for me was gathering up the courage to walk in the BBD.
From that point forward, everything else came naturally. It wasn’t all smooth sailing – the initial workouts were grueling, and the first few weeks of changing up my dietary habits was difficult, but ultimately, the hardest step to take was the first one. From that point onward, the support I received at BBD, and constantly reminding myself of my goals help carried me forward.
