Learn how Bodies By Design Trainers teamed up, trained and ran a half marathon as part of the Toronto Women Run Series in support of the POGO (Pediatric Oncolog group of Ontario) for kids with cancer.
I really enjoy running but I didn’t think I would do a half marathon, the reason I did it was that a client of ours, Diana, who had run her first half marathon two years ago, asked me to (and when it comes to anything fitness related I can never say no!)
When I found out it was for kids with cancer it made me want to do it even more knowing I was running for a good cause. I also wanted to do it for myself to see where I could push myself and do something I haven’t done before.
It was so amazing being around a bunch of women who had the same goal in mind. You could feel the energy in the air and once all of us women started running it was such an adrenaline rush. It definitely helped to have people there cheering you on and seeing signs up to motivate you to continue at ever km you passed. It was at a park and the trail was so beautiful and the fact we ran over bridges and up and down hills made the run a little more interesting.
I prepared for this by running 5 days a week. So for 4 days, I ran 3km and the 5th day I would run 5km. Then giving myself 2 days of rest. I started preparing about 2 months before. The night before I loaded up on carbs and the morning of I had a carb and protein filled breakfast and drank electrolytes.
After the race, I felt so proud of myself for accomplishing something like this I would have never thought I would complete a 10km run in under an hour and it goes to show that all the hard work really paid off!

I always enjoyed going for runs but never thought about doing an actual race. My inspiration was to see how long it would actually take me to complete a 10K half marathon. I wanted to see what my capabilities were. As well doing it with friends was a great bonus.
To prepare, I would try to go for 6K runs at least 2-3 times per week and was very strict with the foods I was consuming. I also did other types of cardio to shock my system (stair master, skipping rope, boxing). Th night before I carb loaded to ensure my muscle and liver glycogen was fully stored and the morning of the run, I had a big breakfast of carbs and protein to give me energy.
The atmosphere was amazing. It was so nice to be surrounded by so many strong women, running for a purpose. The course itself was fun and had a great vibe to it. The beautiful weather definitely helped to keep pushing. It was nice to see myself pushing harder and harder as I got to the finish line, my music definitely kept me going!!
The feeling right after came with a great sense of accomplishment, finishing in 18th in 52 mins. I was so proud of myself for finishing and not stopping once. I felt like all my hard work really came through and showed in my results. Nothing feels better than to accomplish a goal you set out for yourself. All in all, it was a great day spent with great people.
