What was life before you got healthy and fit?
Life was good; I was happy with how and where I was. But in the back of my mind, there was always this small voice telling me that it could be better, that I could be better. I had never pushed myself when it came to working out. I always wondered if I could lift heavier weights, maybe I could look leaner?
What was your AHA moment? What made you want to change your lifestyle?
My wife and I have always been moderately active individuals. But it was my wife Sony who kept encouraging me to be more active. If it were not for her, I would not have committed to come to the gym. Sony had tried various programs in the past and was successful. She takes health very seriously.
My AHA moment was if she can help me with food and workouts, why can’t I try?
I thank my wife, and because of her, I’m here. Initially, I never believed in hiring a personal trainer. Still, my wife convinced me that it would be a life-changing event, and all I can say is by experiencing it, that’s the only way you could understand the importance of it.
How has your life changed?
We joined BBD in Dec, and Dan has been our trainer. I have lost around 40 lbs so far. I can run longer, and I’m able to lift more. Things have become easier around the house, I feel like I can get a lot more done, we’ve undertaken a couple of construction projects at our home, and I didn’t feel as tired as I used to before. I feel energized, I realize now I don’t need as much food to keep me going, and if I eat correctly, it’ll keep me going longer.
Dan, been very helpful. The techniques they use work, but it’s hard to explain until you go through it yourself. Also, Kris has given some great guidance.
When you come into BBD it feels like family.
Everyone knows your name; you get encouragement from not only your trainer but other trainers at the gym. You laugh, you joke, and then everyone gets down to the business of working out. It’s a great environment to keep you motivated.
What is your routine?
We work out with Dan and focus on weights twice a week. I add two days of cardio on my own, as well. Initially, workouts with Dan were very hard. I’d go home, and my body would be sore, and I felt like I needed food ASAP. But slowly, my body started adapting and not ask for more food. I want to keep this habit of working out consistently and keep maintaining my weight.
What would you tell anyone that wants to get started?
Believe in yourself. It takes commitment and a lot of sacrifices, but it’s worth it. If possible, find someone who can workout with you. I had my wife, and we were able to motivate each other, push each other. You will be up and down, and having someone with you helps.
It’s a slow process, and you have to be very patient, and things fall in place.
