What was life like before fitness?
I have been blessed with a beautiful family with 2 children and my husband with whom I have known since I was 11, a rewarding career, and a previous belief and standard for activity to be part of my life.
As I moved through the trajectory of life, shift work, complicated pregnancies and a lapse in self-care, I became increasingly dissatisfied with my body and how I felt in general; mood, spirit and overall health.
What was your “AHA” moment?
In all honesty, I am not sure if I can indeed recognize the one moment it became clear to me a change was needed. I did not feel attractive, I despised pictures being taken, and I was defined by my own distorted self-perception. After leaving a former gym and trying a few different activities as a trial to test the impact on my interest and commitment, I landed on the doorstep of Bodies by Design. It has been over 4 years of discovery, hard work, dedication and genuine happiness since.
This journey did not happen by chance but rather a conscientious commitment to self-care. I mattered, and I was important enough to invest in for myself and the health of my family.
Within the first year my 3 days per week repertoire which included personal training, self-training, and a fabulous new Boot Camp style session – I was inducted to what we now call a “Caroleaner.”
What program did you follow?
I have sustained this momentum and have actually recently in the past 2 months increased my routine to 4 days per week, with the addition of an Interactive small group training session led by Nat. I honestly love starting my Mondays with an early morning work-put- sets the stage for the rest of the week.
BBD is part of my standard work. I made a personal choice to train at 6 am as this works best for my home and work schedule. BBD has the flexibility in scheduling, options, and resources available to assist in making this happen.
I also found it essential to my fitness routine to participate in training sessions whether personal one on one or Interactive style, to add variety and challenge.
Nat has strategically encouraged me to challenge myself in the routines that motivate me to take it to the next level. Caroline, a leader of inspiration and determination, has been motivating to not only me but the “tribe” of Caroleaners that has naturally emerged through a group of individuals with similar goals, needs, and dedication.
Both Nat and Caroline, the staff and trainers, not formerly mentioned, and my gym tribe ALL contribute to who I am right now.
How has life changed for you?
I have lost close to 36 lbs and have maintained the weight loss. However, important to note, although my goals have changed to align with strength training, I am offered variety and options to invigorate my gym time that keeps me interested and invested in coming.
I am stronger than I ever have been. I love healthy clean-eating.
It is a shared interest at BBD which makes it achievable to do. I have influenced my family to participate, and we now have a family membership at the gym where my husband, son, and daughter come to exercise.
My life has been altered and influenced for the positive. This is not just a gym to me but a safe place I come to work on me. There is no intimidation, no embarrassment. I openly go and allow people into my life to share in the good and bad…. It is far more than just a workout!
I began by investing in personal training. This is absolutely necessary to building a sustainable routine and lifestyle. I learned the basics to prevent injury and how to target the areas of my body I wanted to improve. Combined with an initial assessment, meal-planning, and accountability to take ownership of my “journey” with regular check-ins, I made a commitment to myself and shared this with my family for support.
What would you tell anyone that wants to get started?
You decide what matters to you. This is not something you do some of the time or just partially….it is a beautiful commitment to yourself for a healthier, happier, and stronger self!
Keep to it but be kind to yourself and build in flexibility for changes in routine, step-backs, sore muscles, but be prepared for the outcomes you do not think of; the happiness, the friendships, the inspiration…. It will be the best decision to make. You’re not just joining a gym, but a family of people who care who and how you are.
