Throughout high school, I was always very active. I was captain of my provincial soccer team, playing 4+ times a week and I also played with the school soccer and volleyball teams. Halfway through high school, however, I tore my ACL. Between waiting for knee surgery and recovering from the procedure, I was sedentary for more than two years. After months of tireless physiotherapy, I went back to playing with my competitive team, but I wasn’t the same player anymore and I decided to give it up. Along came first year university, and between giving up an active lifestyle, and now binge drinking and late-night/stress eating, I managed to gain the dreaded Freshman 15 (or more like Freshman 35). Within two years I had gone from my 115-pound athletic physique to a 150-pound overweight university student.
One day I decided I had had enough of being lazy and eating poorly. For two months I went on a starvation diet and managed to lose 20 pounds. But, as with any unhealthy method of weight loss, I quickly gained it back (and then some). I finally decided that I had to lose the weight and lose it in a healthy way. I vowed to start working out and eating clean, so I joined a gym and began doing cardio 4-5 times a week. After getting bored of the elliptical, I joined a boxing gym and started boxing 2-3 days a week in addition to 2-3 cardio sessions a week at the gym. I was always intimidated by the weight machines at the gym so I never incorporated strength training into my routine. After dropping down to 130 pounds, I decided to step it up a notch. I purchased the “Beachbody Insanity” home workout DVDs and completed two rounds of it, dropping down to 120 pounds.
I had finally reached by goal weight, but I was still unhappy with the way my body looked. Determined to strengthen my body and tone up, I joined Bodies By Design. I started training 2 times a week with Mat and finally faced my fear of the dreaded weights. Mat taught me how to properly use weights, the TRX straps and kettlebells, helping to tone my body to a level I never thought I could achieve. More importantly, though, he has continued to motivate me to keep going, even when all I want to do is give up. There have been so many times I have wanted to just throw the towel in and go back to my old unhealthy ways, but Mat has always encouraged me to keep eating healthy, to do those last 10 pushups, to not eat those cupcakes and to never stop trying. As much work as I put in to lose the weight, I owe just as much of my weight loss journey to my trainer and Bodies By Design, because without their persistence and attention, I could have easily fallen back into my old habits.
It took me almost two years to lose the weight completely, and I’ve kept it off for over a year now, through a mix of working out with Mat, doing my own strength training and playing soccer. The journey hasn’t been easy, and sometimes keeping to my clean-eating nutrition plan and daily workouts is hard. But despite how good that Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream looks, I’m determined to keep moving forward, pushing myself to work that much harder so that I can maintain the body that I worked my butt off (literally) for.
