I’ve heard many people ask, “Will getting more sleep help me lose weight?” For most people the answer is yes. New studies show people that don’t get enough sleep tend to weigh more. Sleep can affect levels of the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin. When you’re sleepy you may be tempted to reach for a high-sugar, high-calorie snack for a quick boost of energy. And when you’re tired, you may skip that workout you planned to do after work and also skip that meal you planned to cook and pick up some unhealthy fast food instead. So yes, get more sleep to lose weight. On a personal note, when I was a competitive bodybuilder I did not get much sleep, but I noticed that on the weekends when I did get more sleep I would be able to break weight loss plateaus. How much sleep? I recommend 6-8 hours, and it’s true that active people need more sleep than non-active people. Sweet dreams!
