As a child and teenager, I had always enjoyed exercising and running long distances – not marathons – but running for the sake of running and simply being outdoors. As I became older, the aches and pains in the knees and ankles set in. Then marriage and children came along and before I knew it, I had allowed my passion for running to go by the wayside while I kept busy, immersing myself in the busy life of a wife and mother, all the while neglecting the love of exercising and running that I had so enjoyed in my younger years.

Some six years ago I attempted to get back in shape. I tried speed walking, but the knees hurt and the ankles were not co-operating. I missed and craved running, but my body would not allow me to delve back into this activity. I persisted with the walking, convinced that I would never be able to jog or run again. I settled for fast-paced walks whenever the opportunity arose. Although this felt good, it did not provide the invigorating feeling that jogging did. Jogging allowed me to clear my head, to plan and organize my day, and to just think. It was “me” time with exercise all wrapped up in one very gratifying activity. Residing myself to the fact that my running/jogging days were a thing of the past, I continued to walk, but felt that there was something missing.

Then a co-worker introduced me to Bodies by Design and the benefits of working one-on-one with a personal trainer. The trainers, Jason and Alek, talked to me about my past activities and questioned how and why I had stopped. They focused their attention on my weaknesses and challenged me to limits that I thought were unimaginable. Due to their relentlessness and determination to push me to my limits, and beyond, I now jog five kilometres every morning and 10 kilometres on the weekends! I have participated in my first 5-km race and am currently training for a half-marathon next spring! Thanks to my exceptionally talented and persistent trainers, my knees are no longer sore, my ankles do not bother me and I have built up sufficient endurance and strength to reach limits that I thought were beyond my reach. Having trainers who personalize your program allows for maximum reaping of rewards, and my rewards have been two-fold. Firstly, I now have the energy and the endurance to once again run for pleasure, and I have the ability to run in a race if I so choose. Secondly, getting in shape allowed me to get in touch with me. It has allowed me to make permanent lifestyle changes – changes which helped the body, mind and soul.

Wanting to improve one’s life requires time, effort and hard work, all of which require a conscious effort and a commitment. Once you decide to make permanent lifestyle changes, a whole new world of opportunities opens. These doors then allow for the healing, mending and/or simply improving one’s life. We need to take all the good that this life offers us, and to enjoy it means to live our lives to their fullest, with a body, mind and soul that is nourished and loved by the one who knows it best, ourselves.

October 2007 was when I made a decision to join Bodies By Design. I was always overweight, a “big girl” as some would say. I always wanted to make the change and this time I decided to do just that. It wasn’t that my life wasn’t good; I had friends and family that loved me but I wasn’t really happy with myself. I lacked true confidence. I didn’t glow and I wanted to glow. I wanted to feel so good about myself, but for some reason each time I tried a diet or a workout I gave up because it felt as though it was impossible. A friend recommended me to Bodies By Design and my first step to the new me was meeting with my fitness consultant Rose.  I had my first assessment and a “before” picture was also taken. I then got started on their personal training program. I did have some experience in the gym working out but when I told my trainer Nick he just smirked and laughed saying “oh yeah … we’ll see.” He was right.  He pushed me to new levels that I didn’t think was possible. I started to feel good about myself with every workout, every rep, and every set. I started to take a liking to my trainer constantly yelling “five more reps Dan!” There were times where I wanted to break down and quit but Nick would push me and tell me it’s a mental game — if you want it you can have it, just believe it.” He was right. I wanted it so bad that I got it. I pictured myself finishing every workout because that brought me closer to who I wanted to be, and who I should have been all along: confident, strong and glowing. I am unstoppable, there are no limits, and there is no past or future … just now!

marco beforeAs a 23-year-old actor, an opportunity came along that I knew could help jumpstart my career.  But if I was to land this role-of-a-lifetime – playing the love interest in a Hollywood movie opposite starlet Megan Fox – it required me to get into shape and build a body worthy of the big screen. I set out an ambitious goal: lose 40 pounds and sculpt a lean, muscular physique in four months. That’s when I decided to join Bodies By Design.

My starting weight was 205 pounds – a number I had never seen before on the scale. I had never worked out or been active, so I knew this was going to be a challenging journey. After my first training session at BBD, I said to myself on the car ride home, “Oh my god, what did I get myself into? I will never be able to do this.” I’d never felt so exhausted. When I got home, I climbed the top of the stairs and then crumbled to the ground, where I laid in my sweat-soaked T-shirt for 20 minutes. I couldn’t get up, even if I wanted to. I couldn’t believe it was only my first day.

That first workout was tough, but I never gave up or missed a session. Near the end of another grueling workout in my second week, I thought I was going to throw up. I thought I was being pushed too hard and I wanted to give up. But with the advice of my trainers, Alek and Cassandra, I soon realized all of this was necessary to achieve my goal – even if it was excruciating at times.

My trainers came up with a specific plan on how to get my body where it needed to be. For the first two months, I was on a Tone & Weight Loss program to drop the 40 pounds. I was also given a diet plan to follow, which was a complete and healthy overhaul to the way I was used to eating. In my first week, I was thrilled as I lost 8 pounds! And for the first month, I lost nearly a pound a day! However, as my body became accustomed to my new diet and workout plan, dropping the final few pounds was a bit harder. But in the end, it took me only two months to lose my goal weight. The rest of my time was dedicated to gaining muscle mass and sculpting my body through a Muscle Build program, where I gained serious strength and lifted heavier weights.

Though it was very hard to accomplish, I felt amazing after starting to see my six-pack in only six weeks! My transformation energized me in a way I had never felt, and I now have more confidence in myself and the way my body looks. Another positive side effect was that none of my old clothes fit anymore. The first time I went to buy new clothes for my new body was also quite rewarding, and I was astonished to see I dropped from a size 36 waist to a size 32!

marco insideFinally hearing my consultant Dave say I lost the 40 pounds was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. People in my life definitely noticed the difference – not only in my appearance, but in my overall attitude as well. Even other members at BBD complemented me on my progress and asked how I did it.

When I joined BBD, I was presented with an entirely new way of eating. Dave didn’t sugarcoat anything and told me how difficult it would be, but I trusted him and it definitely paid off. Along the way I had a lot of support from my trainers, Alek and Cassandra. Through their advice, their encouraging emails, text messages and overall ambition and expertise, their support was never-ending. I couldn’t have done this without them.

While I was disappointed to learn I came in second place, just being edged out for the role in that Hollywood movie, there have been countless positives that have come out of my journey. The experience landed me in Los Angeles for a day where I rehearsed several scenes with Megan Fox as part of my screen test. (And yes, countless kisses were part of the job duties that afternoon). I even got to pose for a mock poster, which was pretty cool.

My current goal is to further better my body and continue working out on a frequent basis. I will stick to a healthy lifestyle to not only maintain my physical appearance, but to keep myself healthy overall. I know I’ll never go back to my old self and I’ll only get better from here. Having this lifestyle change at this point in my life will most definitely benefit my acting career.

If I can pass on a bit of advice to other clients who want to get in shape, I’d say it’s hard. You might want to give and up and think your goal is unachievable. But believe me, if I can do it, you can too. And when you transform yourself, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment I guarantee is unlike any other. Stick to it!

Chris Gironda knew he had to turn his life around while watching the videotape of his sister’s wedding. Seeing himself in a tuxedo weighing 425 pounds at the age of 24 triggered him to get into shape.The 6-foot-1 Woodbridge resident had played baseball as a youth, but didn’t stay active as he got older. “I had never worked out at the gym, ever, and I was eating the wrong food,” Chris says, noting he was eating fast food several times a week, and usually at 2 a.m.

He made a commitment to himself and signed up at Bodies by Design. Chris wasn’t really serious about his workouts for the first few months, but ramped it up just after his 25th birthday. “My goal was to get onto the cover of this magazine,” he says.

In the next two years, Chris would shed an incredible 190 pounds. He began lifting weights several times a week, coupled with 30-45 minute bouts of cardio. He received exercise tips from family members and friends like Pat Santoli, a previous Inspire to Aspire Client Star Profile who himself had lost about 100 pounds in 15 months.

Chris says his profession as a chef had also held him back for many years. “It was hard because I would take advantage of being able to eat any type of food I wanted, such as desserts and fried foods, for free.

“But then two years ago I decided, ‘I’m going to take advantage of it in a different way. I have all these foods right in front of me, I could just make healthy foods.’” The 27-year-old ate lots of chicken and tuna, and stayed away entirely from pasta and bread, instead obtaining his carbs from vegetables and fruits.

Chris lost a whopping 100 pounds in the first year of his serious training and new diet. He shed another 90 pounds of fat over the next 15 months. He says his initial goal was to drop to 310 pounds, but when he got there, lowered that number to 265, then 250, 245, 240 and eventually 230.

Chris GirondaChris recalls the days he was at his heaviest. “I felt awkward, I just felt so wrong … Everything from going for a walk to putting on my seatbelt was a challenge for me,” he says.

“My size controlled my life. It kept me from doing so many things. I wore tracksuits on the beach, swam with a shirt on, and even refused to go on vacations because of the fear that I wouldn’t fit in the airplane seat.”

Now, Chris says he feels amazing. “I have so much more energy, so much more stamina, so much more confidence. And most of all, I feel healthy.”

Chris has received endless comments of praise from relatives and friends. “Everybody is always saying, ‘You look great! How did you do it?’”

Chris’s current fitness goal is to “get really big and lean — all naturally. Like a rock.”

On the morning of March 26, 2007, I was tipping the scales at 202 pounds, a few hours before my husband and I became the proud parents of two beautiful baby boys. I delivered my sons via a scheduled C-section, and although the surgery went smoothly, the seven weeks of recovery was excruciatingly painful at times. In addition to the sleepless nights and not eating properly, I was left staring a 188-pound version of myself at the end of my recovery.

This weight gain surprised me, as I’ve always exercised and eaten well, but I rationalized that I had a family to take care of, and although I was unhappy with how I looked and felt, there was nothing I could do at the moment — I had different priorities now. I kept this train of thought for a few months until, while at a function with my husband, a woman turned to us and asked, “Will this be your first child?”

I was mortified, but the question spurred a new train of thought. If I didn’t take care of myself, what kind of example would I be setting for my children? It was time to clean up my diet and hit the gym. Unfortunately my plan had a glitch. I found out that I had a severe case of Diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles), which meant no weightlifting, abdominal work or intense cardio.

Although I had to put the gym on hold, I started to eat properly. Finally, in November, I was cleared to exercise and I began my journey with the two trainers I like and despise the most, Nick and Nat. Through their knowledge and determination, I began to see the numbers on the scale drop. They encouraged me to get into the best shape of my life and now, weighing less than my pre-pregnancy weight, I am. Because of the team at BBD I am confident and happy once again. I want to thank the BBD team and my husband for believing in what I could do, even when I didn’t.

It was only a year ago when something happened that made me sit down and reassess “me” …. Who I am, what I had accomplished and where I want to be in 5 to 10 years.  It made me assess all aspects of my life, career and health.

The more I thought about this, I realized I needed to make some significant changes especially related to my health.  In particular, over the last 5 years I noticed that I was gaining weight for no apparent reason.   Knowing my concern, my eldest daughter handed me a copy of ‘Inspire to Aspire’ summer 2005 edition.

The successful results of the Star Profile on the cover seemed real.  I was confident that if someone else could do it, BBD could help me as well. My dream at that moment was crystallized. Not only did I need to, but now I wanted to loose weight and improve my health – I knew at that moment that I wanted to be on the cover of ‘Inspire to Aspire’.

I joined BBD and I started my one-on-one sessions with my personal trainer Brian.  I combined these sessions with my own gym routine 5 times a week.  Over time, I started to note some significant differences in my shape and weight, which were confirmed by my personal coach Kris each time we met for an evaluation.  I was feeling energized, happier and more confident in my appearances – all of which inspired me to keep going.

So what’s the secret?

Those who have seen and have taken particular note of my progress are very curious about what it is I am doing.  I often get asked “What’s the secret to your success?”

Interestingly enough there is no real secret.  My formula for success is the same as it would be for anything else you wish to achieve in life. I refer to it as:

Endurance: staying power; patience; stamina

 

It’s taken me 1 year, but I did it!  I achieved my weight loss goals and have been selected as a Star Profile. I have proven to myself that my formula for success really works.

As I write this I am staring at my one-year-old son and marveling at this little miracle. I reflect over the last year and 9 months and relive the whirlwind of emotions that I have felt. I have always been slim and fit my whole life, thanks to healthy eating, a good exercise routine and a little help from the gene pool. I had always wanted to be a mother, but my pregnancy had come very unexpectedly. I did not feel prepared for this challenge, but I guess you never do. I did not know what to expect throughout my pregnancy. And the thought of the inevitable weight I would gain frightened me. On April 22, 2005, after 22 hours in labour and an episiotomy, I gave birth to an 8lbs, 7oz healthy, happy boy. We named him Cristiano Vincenzo James, and after one look at him I knew that he would be the joy of my life! After the birth I was in excruciating pain. I couldn’t sit, stand or care for my newborn son. Three weeks later I was admitted back into the hospital for an emergency D.N.C. Upon leaving the hospital I was an emotional wreck, but thankfully I have very supportive family and friends that helped me on the road to recovery.

As the storm finally settled, depression hit. I looked in the mirror and was horrified to see that I still looked as if I was 7 to 8 months pregnant! I cried a lot, and struggled daily with self-esteem. Two-and-a-half months later I finally received the OK from my doctor to start exercising again. I began at home with a basic workout. Within a month I felt stronger and healthier, both mentally and physically. At this point I decided I was ready to “hit the gym.” I came back to Bodies by Design where I had the pleasure of working with Jason, Daniel and Christian. They played a huge part in my success and my renewed confidence through positive attitude, encouragement and personal care. I began another challenge soon after as I returned to work. Learning how to balance work, home and a child was difficult but with my new positive outlook I was able to do all of this and more.

It has been a year and I have lost 30 lbs! I thank my husband and my son for keeping me on the move. The next challenge for me? To be in better shape then before I get pregnant… there’s no stopping me now!

I’ve been a member at Bodies By Design since August 2004.  I joined the gym to lose weight and to get in shape for an upcoming police exam.

All my life I had a challenging time with my weight, from growing up as a child until now, I was always obese.  When I turned 18 I had joined another gym and I went from 260 lbs to 230 lbs in less than 2 months.  Then I became a mobile security supervisor and began working a 15hr day-shift — that’s when I began skipping the gym and eating fast food late at night. In no time I got back the weight that I had lost, plus added more. By the end of it I was at a whopping 292 lbs.

Pat Santoli insideI began to have low self-esteem and was embarrassed to leave my house, but what really made me think about losing weight was when I returned a pair of track pants several times because they were too small. Those pants were size XXL.

One day in July 2003, my mother had brought home a diet plan from a dietitian that a co-worker had given her.  I started the diet with my parents, as they were obese as well, and before I knew it I began to lose weight and feel better about myself.  By August 2004, I had lost over 46 lbs, but still I wasn’t satisfied, I wanted to prove to everyone who said I couldn’t do it that I could lose the weight I wanted; that is when I joined Bodies By Design.  Jason and the rest of the team at BBD were very hopeful in guiding me in the right path to success.  After a few short months, I had noticed a drastic change in my body, life and mind.  Jason’s help motivated me and cheered me on, which helped me very much in bringing up my self-esteem.  By July 2005, I had lost over 61 lbs, and now I could fit comfortably in a size 32 pants instead of a size 52 pants.  I had gained muscle, toned my body and was the fittest I ever was in my life.  Plus, I had lost a total of 108 lbs, which without BBD, wouldn’t have happened.  This is the start of a new life for me.  THANK YOU Bodies By Design, because of your knowledge I can now become the best cop on the beat and not have to worry about my gut getting in the way.

My advice to anyone starting out is to never lose hope and never give up — it’s a long and hard road ahead, but if you keep your head on the right path you will win first place in the race!

I joined Bodies By Design 3 months after giving birth to my third child.  My children are now 5 years, 3 years and 7 months old.  My goals were to lose weight, decrease body-fat percentage and tone my body as quickly as possible.

Patricia DeDomenico insideI began my fitness regime a little skeptical due to a back injury from a 1998 car accident, however, in such a short period of time (about 4 months) with the patience, knowledge and encouragement of two AWESOME trainers (Paul and Dave), I have seen my body reshape itself. I feel stronger and healthier and have regained my positive self-image! I train 3-4 times per week using a combination of weight training (One on One personal training) and cardio. I made modifications to my diet i.e. less sweets, lots of fruits and veggies, increased protein, less carbs and lots of water.

Thanks to my trainers for always keeping me motivated and focused and inspiring me to reach my own personal goals.  My advice to others would be to set small realistic goals that you will attain and then reward yourself once you have reached them.  Dave, my trainer, had these motivating words for me: “your ‘don’t quit’ attitude from day one has been the driving force behind your lifestyle change for the present and for the future.” On that note, realize that results do not happen overnight. It does take a few months to notice visible changes, so never give up!

I have been a member at BBD for just over four years.  Initially, I joined to simply lose weight and improve my fitness level.  I didn’t dare set any more detailed goal than that.   After becoming familiar with the exercises and equipment through One-on-One Personal Training, I began attending Interactive classes faithfully twice a week.  I started to see small changes almost immediately.  Having already modified what I was eating, together with this increase in activity I actually dropped a few dress sizes and noticed a great improvement in my physical endurance.  I was enjoying my two favourite activities, downhill skiing in the winter and biking in the other seasons with a renewed interest and recharged stamina.  At each assessment it was noted that I was making progress, and I chose to continue at this slow and gradual rate feeling that I was doing the best I could within my schedule and family life.  There was no pressure put on me.

loretta dalbello insideAt the end of last summer however, something changed.  I came back to the gym following my vacation leave and announced that I was ready to see some dramatic results!  What did I need to do to get me there?   First I was provided with a meal plan that changed when and how often I ate.  Second, I made a commitment to do 3 Interactive classes a week, which I followed with 45 minutes of cardio.  Finally I picked a target weight and time-frame and then just kept visualizing myself that way.  It was not easy and not without its ups and downs, but overall I convinced myself that I could do this.  Anything is possible with commitment and determination.  I enjoyed my best season of skiing last winter and increased both the distance and frequency of my bike trips this summer.  I’m now addicted and love biking on the beach!

My advice to anyone starting out is that a little effort will give you little results and the extra effort is what will take you all the way.  Finally I want to thank all the trainers that worked with me, in particular Daniel and Christian.  Their encouragement and belief that I could improve really made the difference.  Thanks BBD, it just keeps getting better.

Dom Reda, a 42-year-old Vaughan resident, was pudgy and weighing a little more than 200 pounds when he decided he wanted to get active and shape up.

“My wife actually joined Bodies By Design first, and she was getting some outstanding results, and convinced me to joined Bodies as well,” he says.

“I’ve been here ever since … a little over 8 years.”

Dom toned up dramatically and says he’s achieved the fitness goals he had set for himself. At 10 per cent body fat, he’s able to see those six-pack abs many guys long for.

“I didn’t lose a lot of weight, I actually increased muscle size and decreased body fat,” he says.

“And I’ve done that consistently with the help of Bodies By Design and the feedback they give me on an annual basis.”

Mark Roccatani, a banking sector employee, was pretty lethargic before he joined Bodies By Design. The 39-year-old had tried working out at home and aggressive dieting, but nothing worked.

“Ever since joining Bodies, and through their instruction, I have been able to not only lose weight, but enjoy a pretty healthy lifestyle,” she says. “I feel that I am able to give back to my family, to my job and to myself.”

Silvia Giordano before Bodies by Design

I joined Bodies by Design shortly after having my third child. After giving birth, I weighed 165 pounds and remained at that weight for quite some time. Shortly after that, I was at a function where I was approached and asked if I was pregnant again. This question humiliated me and made me feel uneasy. In that moment I made a decision for myself, one that would help me change my lifestyle and be healthier. From that moment on, I knew I had to change.

I joined this fantastic fitness studio and it changed my life. A group of four friends, including myself, joined interactive classes, faithfully attending weekly. With the help and encouragement of the trainers at this facility, I began to aspire to reach my target. This goal was ambitious, but with perseverance, commitment and dedication, my objective was not as impossible as I initially thought.

Throughout this entire experience, I learned how to discipline myself through positive eating habits, exercising regularly, and taking all the positive feedback into account that I received from my trainers. My desire to achieve this goal was applied through my daily life routines. At first, it was difficult to maintain this high standard, but with will power and self-control, I began to shed the pounds. Before I knew it, my goal was in reach.

Today, I am proud to say that I have lost 40 pounds, and I owe a huge thank you to all those people that contributed to my success. Without Bodies by Design, I wouldn’t be the same person I am today.
