“I have won the battle so far with Mother Nature”
I heard it often said by many women my age but never understood it: perimenopause. What is that? There actually isn’t a precise time for perimenopause because it’s really more of a progression than a series of specific events. Was this just the beginning to a disaster waiting to happen? My yoga instructor said, “Embrace the change Mary.” Forget that … Mother Nature is in for a fight!

Kris: Hey. Kris here from Bodies By Design Personal Training. We’re proud to announce our next Client Star Profile, Mary. Mary’s story is about a woman who decided to fight Mother Nature. You see, Mother Nature brings something called menopause for women, and Mary wants to give Mother Nature a good fight. Here’s Mary and Nat her personal trainer until the next Client Star Profile story.
Mary: When I joined Bodies By Design, my biggest challenge was understanding weight resistance training. Not wanting to bulk up, and how those movements would … I didn’t believe it that they would actually make me lose the weight. When I met Nat for the first time, I’ve never had a personal trainer before so I didn’t know what to expect. With his encouragement, and his motivation, and the fact that he constantly changed up the workouts helped me understand that those exercises really target your muscles and those muscles like magic melt off the weight off your body.
I’ve been working out on the cardio side many, many years. I also used to log my food, but not the way the log, nutrition log that Bodies By Design has where they we’re able to say you need to be at this calorie intake. Every week I used to get weighed and the weight was coming off. For me that was magic because my biggest struggle was not being able to lose a pound. With perimenopause, you’d be up five pounds and then you could come down a pound, but you would never be going downward. This to me was just pure magic.
My husband noticed a lot of changes with me in terms of the hormonal imbalance with me and the sleepless nights and the weight gain. Perimenopause is a progression to menopause. What it’s done to me is not allowed me to maintain the weight I wanted to maintain. What I realized when I was driving home from work a roll which I’ve never felt in my life over my pants, I realized I’ve got to do something about this. Emotionally, mentally it was draining and that’s when I decided to make a change. That’s when I went to see Kris at Bodies By Design.
Speaker 4: Mary always prided herself in how she looked, how she worked out really hard and that she got results and that she felt really good. Then as she was going through the perimenopause all that pride went away. I could see it after the first probably three or four workouts. She would come home and she would just say, “I’m going to beat this thing because I do feel really well. I do have really good people,” that are helping her out training. Just see her today. She’s done it.
Mary: I’m a better mom. I’m a better wife. I think it’s a full package. I work out because I love my body. I work out because the rewards are wonderful. For me I’m a lifer. For me I enjoy it. I get all this extra energy. It empowers me. I feel strong inside. I feel strong mentally, and I feel strong physically. It’s like the best thing ever that’s happened to me.
Nat: When Mary first came in she had an extensive background in cardiovascular activity. At work on her lunch break she did cardio classes, kick boxing, yoga, etc., but coming into here she was a little leary at the resistance training and was scared that she would bulk up. I reassured her that it would only help her reach her goal. The biggest roadblock Mary had, I believe, was perimenopause.
She also had some knee problems which were addressed by a physical therapist. I knew that we would have to work around that. I would have to give her exercises that were going to strengthen her knee. Yeah, I think Mary is getting … She has gotten a lot better. She’s gotten a lot stronger. She doesn’t give up until she reaches her goal, follows her diet 100%, always in here. She never misses a session. Basically, Mary got her results from three things; her diet, her exercise, and her mind. She always says,]” which means fire within, fire inside.
Mary: Fourteen years ago was the fact that we couldn’t have any children. We’ve been married now 24 years and we’re so lucky to have this wonderful little boy in our life. We call him Mateo because it does mean a gift from heaven, but the challenge with all the infertility drugs I had put on a lot of weight and really never was able to take off all of it. Now, he keeps me hopping. I’ve got the energy and the strength so that we can do things in life. It’s a lot of fun.
Kris: Kris, here again. I really hope you enjoyed Mary’s story. Mary did not embrace change. She fought Mother Nature and I think she’s stronger because of it. Until the next Client Star Profile story, inspire to aspire and remember the next story could be about you.
