To Cleanse or Not to Cleanse?
Let Kris J Simpson explain to you why cleanses or trendy detoxes are unsustainable for long-term weight-loss.
Let Kris J Simpson explain to you why cleanses or trendy detoxes are unsustainable for long-term weight-loss.To cleanse or not to cleanse ’tis the question today. You may have been told that you need to do a cleanse because toxins have built up in your body and you need to get rid of these poisons. And if that’s the truth, then great. But ask yourself this question, are you really doing the cleanse to get rid of a fast and easy 10 pounds of weight loss?
Well, there are better solutions for long-term weight loss and you don’t have to go through the misery of a cleanse and then have to suffer a rebound in your weight when it’s all said and done. What cleanses really are just fancy crash diets under the pretence of a healthy detox. They severely restrict your calories, so yeah, of course you’re going to lose weight, you’re starving. These cleanses are normally under the disguise of fancy concoctions and different brews consisting of liquids and syrups, herbs, natural supplements, and all with a hefty price tag. Some of the popular cleanses include the colon or liver cleanses, the Master Cleanse, which was made popular by the singer Beyonce. It’s a concoction of lemon water and maple syrup and cayenne pepper, along with a herbal detox tea, taken daily for about 10 days and nothing else. Beyonce said it made her feel awful and cranky. The 10-Day Green Smoothie, and the Isagenix Cleanse for Life.
Cleanses tend to have unclear start and end dates because they are very hard to stick with in the long-term, not to mention unhealthy if you follow the program for too long. Yo-yo dieting back and forth between cleansing and binging (because you’ve starved yourself for however many days) won’t bring your body lasting and sustainable changes. Short-term negative side effects include low blood sugar, low energy, nausea, dizziness, and hangry-ness, dehydration, diarrhea, and of course, excessive gas. Cleanses also mess up your natural gut flora as well, making you more susceptible to infections and food sensitivities. In fact, I’ve seen a lot of friends of mine do these cleanses and all of a sudden they become lactose intolerant or allergic to wheat. There’s no scientific evidence that shows that cleanses remove toxins from the body. In fact, our bodies can do it on its own if you provide it what it needs. So what your body really needs to stay regular, avoid constipation, and achieve homeostasis, is proper sleep, enough water, and a plentiful amount of fruits, vegetables, and fibre.
Instead, change your eating patterns gradually. In my book the All Inclusive Diet, I advocate inclusivity of foods instead of banishing them. I advice my clients to consume foods that makes them feel energized as opposed to making them feel sluggish and tired. Even though detoxing and cleansing sound like the solution, there’s no quick fix to achieving a healthy body. Balance is key!
