When is the best time to weigh yourself? I can tell you a personal story which will illustrate of when it’s NOT the best time to weigh yourself.
Back in my obsessive and compulsive bodybuilding days, I was weighing in three times a day all on three different scales, and I was a very confused bodybuilder by the end of my dieting.
We give our clients the same advice; the best time to weight yourself is going to be the same day, the same clothes, the same time, the same place. Everything’s got to be the same for consistent weigh in’s because you see, there’s two big factors that control your weight. That’s water IN and OUT and food IN and OUT.
For our experiment today, let’s first weigh in… Okay, 194.8 lbs. Next we will need 500 milliliters of water. Now let me ask you a question…how much do you think my weight is going to change after drinking 500 milliliters of water? Let’s find out!
195.6 lbs… Wow! Almost a 1 pound increase in my weight; that’s up 1 pound in under 1 minute!! That’s how much my weight changed. Case and point here, I’m just trying to show you how much water can affect your weight over the course of the day.
Let’s talk now about water OUT. For this experiment we will need a sauna. How many pounds of water do you think you can lose if you sat a sauna with the garbage bag on? In fact, I usually make a sarcastic comment when clients ask me, “Kris, I need to lose a few pounds.” I say, “You have a few hours, because I got a garbage bag, I got a sauna, and I guarantee you can lose about five pounds of water in five hours.”
So when is the best time to weight in? Just make sure it’s at the same time of day, in the same place with the same clothes on and remember that water IN and OUT will make a BIG difference on the scale. Until the next time… Get a GRIP on your scale!
