Kris: Hey, it’s Kris Simpson from Bodies by Design Personal Training. We’re proud to announce our next client start profile Sandro. Sandro has a love for the game of basketball, but you see, he hasn’t been playing much because he’s got a serious heart condition and some serious arthritis. After some gentle coaxing from his family and some serious coaching, he ends up getting back into the game. Here’s Sandro to tell the next client star profile story.
Sandro: In 2006, I was diagnosed with a-fib, which is basically a condition of the heart where it races to about 200 to 300 beats a minute. I was constantly tired, and because of that, I was gaining a lot of weight. I just didn’t have the energy to do anything. The second major setback that I had was in my early 20s, I was diagnosed with arthritis, which really prevented me from doing a lot of different types of exercises. Sometimes, it was just difficult to bend down and tie my shoes.
I played basketball from when I was a teenage kid. I just loved playing basketball. I love being on the court. Because of the arthritis, I wasn’t able to play anymore. It was just too difficult to turn. Even running was difficult on my knees, my ankles, the back issues, just bending down. What helped me a lot was working with your personal trainers, getting back into condition. I’m glad to say now that I’m able to play two or three times a week.
Being diagnosed with a-fib was a major setback for me, thinking I’m in my early 40s, I have a heart problem. It was scary, especially when it was racing to 200, 300 beats a minute. They put me on medication. The medication basically brought my heart rate down to about 120, 130 beats a minute. What happened is after I joined Bodies by Design and getting back into shape it was going down. It started going down to about 100 beats per minute.
It was still erratic. It’s still going between 100 and 110, but it definitely dropped about 20 or 30 beats a minute. In March of 2012, I had gone in for a procedure called heart ablation that can correct the timing of my heart, so it would normally beat … about 80 beats was the goal. Actually, I’m happy to say I’m down to about 50 beats a minute now which is really good.
My doctor actually said that the risks were about one percent, so a very minimal risk, but he said that there’s going to be a probability that you’re going to have to have it done a second time. Usually, the success rate is about 70 percent. Well, because I was in some type of good shape at that point, he said my conditioning is definitely going to help. I’m surprised it did help. It worked the first time. I’m no longer on heart medication which is great. It’s great when you see your heartbeat down to about 52, 53 beats a minute, actually a lot lower than what they were shooting for.
My doctor actually did tell me to lose weight. A few years, I tried dieting, tried to exercise on my own. You lose weight, gain it back, then gain some, lose, continuing at this point for a yoyo effect. That’s when I finally broke down and said, you know what, I better start doing something about it. With the urging of my family, I decided to join Bodies by Design, and for me, that’s’ the best thing that I ever could do for myself.
The weight issue gradually started coming down. I started feeling better. I’m not self-conscious about my weight anymore. One of the first things I found is the trainers are very positive, and they’re very motivating and they’re there to help you. They knew about my health issues coming in. The program was designed around my heart condition, designed around my arthritis. It actually changed up the way I eat.
The trainers were mentioning that I should start eating more frequently actually. I was surprised about that. I was thinking lose weight, eat less, but they’re actually telling me “You should eat more frequently. Try to eat some protein every couple of hours”. I did change my diet that way and I found that it’s working. The major accomplishment for me was definitely the weight loss. Around the 60 pound mark was what I lost, and it was incredible.
The other thing that’s positive for me is being able to do what I wasn’t able to do for many years, and that’s play basketball again. Seeing some of those people that I haven’t seen in a while, they look at you, and they say “Wow, look at you. What happened?” We take a lot of time worrying about tuning our cars, looking after our home and fail to look after ourselves. You should look after yourself, and with using a personal trainer with Bodies by Design it was the best thing I could’ve done for myself.
Michael: Sandro’s attitude, he really likes to have fun while he’s working out. The more I push Sandro the more he wanted me to push him. He would always ask to make it harder the next time. Even if he was joking and he couldn’t complete it, he’d still say “Give me some more next time”. He always wants to strive for more, and it’s no surprise why he achieves his goal.
Sandro’s ultimate goal was weight loss, and he did want to get back to basketball. Once his lifestyle changed and the food became very consistent, his attendance here was always consistent, and as he got stronger it probably became less of an issue. Also, he built a lot of confidence with the elbow and the body strength and everything. I think Sandro is more aware now of how to eat properly and how to live a very high-quality lifestyle. Because he enjoys it so much, it’s going to be a lot easier for him to stay on track.
You don’ lose 60 pounds by accident, so he knows the journey that it took to get there. He’s definitely going to appreciate that, and I think he’ll keep the weight off no problem. He’ll just keep striving for it.
Kris: Kris here again. What a great comeback story about a guy that spends a little bit more time tuning his body and less time tuning his car. He got himself back into the game. Until the next client start profile story, inspire to aspire. Remember, the next movie could be about you.
