I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. In my early 20s I was a size 13/14 and I was able to share clothes with my mother! I soon came to discover that exercise and portion control were the key to losing weight and dropping dress sizes. By the time I reached my early 30s I was in the best shape I had ever been, but then life threw me a curveball. I got sick and was bed-ridden for close to a year. Once the doctors realized what I was fighting it was time for me to start physio and rehabilitation training. At this point I had gained back the weight I had lost. So not only was I struggling to fix my health but I was also struggling with my weight again! My trainer and I started off by using the treadmill for 2 minutes at an extremely slow pace and I performed numerous exercises on the stability ball. Soon after that we added water rehabilitation, and a short time later I was back in the gym again. I had overcome my hurdles and I was back on track. My illness left me some limitations but nothing that would stop me from leading a normal life or being able to achieve my fitness goals.
The Wake-Up Call
I was working with a rehab trainer who focused solely on my rehab but not on helping me stay fit and strong. As a result, my weight slowly started to creep up again. The trainer insisted that we had to focus on my mobility in order for me to stay healthy but I knew I also needed to be fit and strong in order to be healthy! My clothes were getting tighter, my energy level was poor and I felt terrible about myself. I went to my doctor and to a naturopath to ensure my thyroid and everything else was functioning properly as my trainer kept insisting I must have a medical issue that was hindering me. Although I went for a lot of testing, deep down I knew all was well with me (regardless of my minor limitations) and that it was my workouts that needed the revamp! I had driven by Bodies By Design many times before and had often considered stopping in but I never did. I was “comfortable” with my trainer so why change? Finally, when all my tests came back confirming what I already knew, I realized it was time to make a change. That’s when I called BBD and made an appointment to come in and see Kris Simpson.
The BBD Fitness & Weight-Loss Program
When I first walked into BBD I was intimidated. There was so much going on and so many fit people around me. I felt out of place. Quickly, however, this feeling disappeared. Kris took the time to sit with me and go through step-by-step what it was I wanted to accomplish and how the BBD program would help me get there. Before I knew it I was on the road to achieving my goals! I knew that the BBD program was for me because it had everything I was looking for: exercise, a way to track my food, and professional trainers that took my fitness goals as seriously as I did. I love the fact that each and every time I go in for a training session I don’t have to worry about doing the same exercise twice – my routine changes every time. We are working the same muscles but challenging them in different ways. I’m never bored and constantly challenged! In the past I was so bored with my programs that I was constantly cancelling sessions. At BBD, the thought of cancelling doesn’t even cross my mind. I look forward to each and every workout and even my weigh-ins! We work hard but have fun along the way too. I also love the fact that I don’t have to remind my trainers to weigh me or measure me: every Wednesday is weigh-in day. I am made accountable for myself but by weighing me and measuring me shows me that they too take it as seriously as I do. I cannot describe the amazing feeling of finally breaking the scale. I had been stuck in such a rut and I was so discouraged. I thought I would never lose the weight and be fit again but the team at BBD proved me wrong! I have reached my goal but that initial goal has now changed. Four more pounds to go and then I will set a new goal. The team at BBD proved to me that I was right – regardless of my body’s physical limitations I could still achieve the fitness goals I always had in mind for myself. With their help and dedication we were able to get there and we are still going strong to get me even further! I can’t thank them enough.
The Long-Term Goal
My long-term goal is to stay mobile, strong, fit and healthy. And with the dedicated trainers I have at BBD I know that this won’t be an issue.
