sarah SAF coverIn November 2005, I competed in my first-ever Figure Competition. Figure is categorized as the “female form of bodybuilding.” When judges are critiquing “Figure Competitions” they look for competitors that display a toned, athletic physique showcasing femininity, muscle tone, poise, symmetry and beauty/flow of the physique.

After my first competition I was disappointed I didn’t place in the Top 5 and so I was determined to place in the Top 3 in my next competition! Prior to the next event, I trained vigorously and extremely hard every day for 18 weeks, drastically changed my diet and set focus on my goals. I dropped 35 pounds by Competition Day and was prepared to take charge! I ended up placing 2nd overall. I was ecstatic with this outcome! I then went on to compete in the Provincials and placed 5th overall.

After a few Figure competitions, I decided to try my luck with in the world of Fitness competitions/modeling. I absolutely loved it! I found my niche! I competed with many organizations and Fitness Shows such as the WBFF, SAF, Sportslab and Fitness Star. In addition, I have been published in magazines such as Inside Fitness, Beyond Fitness, SAF Online Publication and Oxygen, and most recently, featured in Inside Fitness Magazine’s “2010 Hot & Fit 100” (January 2010).

Once I had set my goals, my motivation and drive never died! I believe goal-setting is a KEY to motivation. If we don’t set goals for ourselves (no matter how big or small), what is there to look forward to?

On September 18, 2010, I competed in a Thai boxing match at the International Sports Spectacular in Detroit, Michigan. It had been a while since I’d participated in something as nerve-wracking as this. I can remember the adrenaline coursing through my veins and my heart pumping a mile a minute as I stared across the ring at my opponent. All of the intense training and sacrifices I had made over the past eight weeks (including strict dieting) would now serve its purpose in three 2-minute rounds.

My original opponent could not make the fight, so I was given a replacement who was 20 pounds heavier than me! Despite being heavily outweighed, I felt I did extremely well and won the fight (since there was a replacement opponent, the fight was declared an exhibition and therefore no winner is declared). Nevertheless, the feeling I had during and after this intense moment was indescribable – it was almost surreal. It was a pleasurable experience and I especially enjoyed the process of getting to this point. The support I received during my training and the fight was overwhelming. I look forward to feeling this type of excitement again very soon at my next fight!
