What’s Your New Year’s Resolution?

December 31, 2010 by

A recent online poll listed the most common New Year’s Resolutions, and it’s no surprise getting active and losing weight rank in at #2 and #3. Here are the Top 10 resolutions:

  1. Spend More Time with Family and Friends (work shouldn’t always come first)
  2. Be More Active (start exercising/increase your fitness)
  3. Lose Weight (shed the unwanted fat and improve your diet)
  4. Quit Smoking (nicotine replacement products are helpful)
  5. Enjoy Life More (put more focus on your own happiness!)
  6. Drink Less (a great way to cut calories)
  7. Get Out of Debt (get a handle on your finances)
  8. Learn Something New (take a class or try a craft)
  9. Help Others (volunteering is rewarding)
  10. Get Organized (reduce the clutter in your home/office)

So if you want to make a positive life change (and avoid being the 90% who give up on their resolution by March) make a plan by setting realistic goals and timeframes for when to have them complete. Get support from experts in their field (like personal trainers!) and the people around you. Here’s to making 2011 one to remember!

Which is the most fattening holiday drink?

This Christmas season you could be ingesting hundreds of calories and fat grams without even taking a bite of food! Of these popular holiday drinks, which is the most fattening?

a) rum punch

b) egg nog

c) hot chocolate

d) chocolate martini

It’ll be helpful to know the answer to keep the weight off this month!

And the answer is: Chocolate martini!

A chocolate martini contains a whopping 438 calories and 20 grams of fat! All the cream and added sugar makes this drink one to avoid. Egg nog comes in second with 343 calories and 19 grams of fat, while rum punch places a close third with 340 calories. You might be surprised to know hot chocolate contains 330 calories and 17 grams of fat (and that’s without any alcohol). Here’s a healthy tip: when preparing drinks, try using low-fat or fat-free milk instead of cream and calorie-free sweeteners instead of sugar.

Does raw milk have more health benefits than pasteurized milk?

December 20, 2010 by

Advocates of unpasteurized milk, or “raw milk,” claim a number of health benefits attributed to dairy products that don’t go through the pasteurization process. They claim untreated milk is a “miracle cure” for illnesses such as asthma or gastrointestinal disorders. Pasteurization, however, is credited with preventing diseases such as diphtheria, salmonellosis and listeriosis. Food scientists stress that any benefits provided by raw milk are unsupported by scientific evidence. Case and point, although raw milk tastes incredible, the risks outweigh the benefits so don’t race out to buy your own cow…

Personal Training Tip: MMA circuit – Bodies By Design

Bodies by Design Fitness Tips

get-it-right

Claudio performs a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) circuit using a dummy bag. This is an intense combination that works your entire body.

This MMA circuit consists of five parts. First, straddle the dummy bag and throw alternating punches for 30 seconds. Second, go beside the bag and strike with alternating knees, also for 30 seconds. Third, lift the bag (make sure you lift with your legs and keep your back straight!) and slam it five times. Fourth, you’re going to lift the bag up again onto your shoulder and run up and down the gym floor. Lastly, squat with the bag on your shoulder 10 times. That’s one set. Try for two or three sets, depending on your fitness level. This circuit will get your heart rate racing and burn some serious calories!
